As an online student, I used to create a Google calendar for each class, and added all assignments and due dates to make sure that I wasn't missing anything. As a teacher, I find that a Google calendar is more reliable than my remembering to send out reminders, so I create a calendar for each class then add all my students.
Send the following instruction (or make your own screenshot after creating a class calendar), so students can set their own reminder setting. Notifications can be set to "Email 1 day before at 5 am" or whatever reminder setting works for the subscriber. NOTE: The class calendar will show up under "Other Calendars" rather than under "My Calendars" on their end.
